Little E Update

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Little E is doing much better. He has only needed his inhaler once each of the past two days. Both times were after some intense playing outside. His cold is still hanging on, so there is hope that once it is gone, the asthma symptoms will be too.

Little E’s Unexpected Trip to the Doctor

Monday, April 21st, 2008

As I told you in my last post, Little E was up early this morning having trouble breathing. I naturally assumed that he had phlegm in his throat that was blocking his airway and didn’t think much of it.

That is until later this morning when I noticed his chest heaving as he struggled for breath.

I called the doctor and was trying to decide whether to bring him in right away or wait a while to see how he was when he came into the room with a look of panic on his face and announced, “Mom, I can’t breathe!”

The doctor, who was still on the phone, said she could see him right away.

I brought him up there and when she listened to him, she thought he had inhaled an object because she could not hear any breath.

She had him breathe in a nebulizer for 10 minutes, then listened again.

This time, she could hear his breathing, but it was wheezy.

She said that she is not ready to say he has asthma, but his body is “acting” like it has asthma and he needs to use an inhaler every four hours, as needed, and take 3 days of steroids.

I cannot explain the panic a momma feels when her little guy tells her he cannot breathe.

It looks like he is going to be fine, though.

Hopefully, he will not have serious asthma, but we will just have to wait and see what happens.

My Baby’s Growing Up

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

This morning, Little E came over to my side of the bed when I was just waking up.

As I groggily opened my eyes, I joyfully exclaimed, “Oh! You here to snuggle!”

He hasn’t been snuggling with me lately because he would rather draw with Big E. He’s reaching that age where boys (maybe girls, too, I have no idea) start to pull away. Big E was the same way, but I had a baby on the way, so it was not as hard to accept.

Needless to say, I was so happy to see him there this morning. I just felt like I really could use a good snuggle. (I am not sure if that had anything to do with the fact that I started my period shortly thereafter.)

“Uuuummmm…” [pause]

I could tell by the look on his face that he was conflicted. He hadn’t come in to snuggle, but he could see that I was excited to snuggle and he didn’t want to break the news to me.

Realizing my mistake, I let him off the hook.

“You didn’t come in here to snuggle, did you?”

He shook his head.

“That’s okay,” I said quickly, before he had a chance to feel bad, “we don’t need to snuggle right now. What did you want?”

I can’t even remember what it was.

All I can remember is how broken hearted I was when I realized that my little guy is too grown up for his morning mommy snuggle time.

After he left, I remarked to my husband, Bob, that Little E once said, when he gets to be too old to snuggle, Dad can snuggle with me.

It wasn’t the same, but it was nice nonetheless.

How did you cope with your baby growing up?

Do I even have any readers who do not still have a baby?

Does This Mean I Blog Too Much?

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Last night, Little E came into our room because he had a bad dream. This morning over breakfast, he shared what it was about.

It seems some giant clock tower came to life and was chasing him. (I think that was because he was watching Power Rangers Time Force yesterday, in which the Rangers live in a clock tower.) He was running to me for help, but I wasn’t paying attention because I was on the computer blogging!

Did you hear that? I wouldn’t save my sweet baby boy from the clock tower monster because I was too busy blogging.

I looked at my husband and said, “Gee, does that mean I spend too much time blogging?”

At least my husband reads my blogs, so he knows there is no way that is true.

Cute Kid Moment

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

When I was visiting my parents-in-law last weekend, my MIL was making dinner in the Crock Pot.

I overheard Little E say to her, “My mom has one of those.  Hers cooks slow, so she calls it a slow cooker.”

Life With Boys

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Little E came out of the playroom to tell me that there was a spider in there.

“He just slinged a web above my toy bins!”

Slinged a web?” I asked with a chuckle.

“Yeah. Above my toy bin. [Pause] He slung a web?”

I am not sure which is funnier, that he thinks spiders “sling” webs or that he thought I emphasized the word “slinged” because it was improperly conjugated.

More From Little E, Comedian

Little E’s joke of the day.

He made this up all by himself, I swear!

What do you get when you cross a rooster with a boy crossing the road eating crackers?

A crunch-a-doodle-doo!

Little E, Comedian

Here’s a knock-knock joke that Little E made up this morning.

Knock-knock.

Who’s there?

Banana.

Banana, who?

Don’t eat me! I’m just a talking banana.

If you think that was funny, get a load of this classic that he made up a few months ago.

Knock-knock.

Who’s there?

Banana.

Banana, who?

Banana been knocking on the door all day!

Oh, man. For the longest time, any time he heard that joke, he would crack up laughing!

I love age 4.

Fun With Preschool

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

Most of the things that Little E knows, he was not taught. I mean, he just sort of picked them up somewhere. I have never really sat down and taught him anything intentionally.

I decided this week that I would take some time each evening to sit down with him and teach him something.

Last night, I introduced him to the lowercase alphabet. He already knows the upper case one, and he is learning the letter sounds and showing other signs of reading readiness, so I figured that I would teach him the lowercase alphabet, which he will need to be able to read books.

I wrote out the uppercase and lowercase letters side-by-side, then I asked him to tell me the similarities and differences between them. I wanted him to recognize that while some letters look the same (like S and s), some letters do not look anything alike (like G and g).

After, I wrote out a few lowercase letters and “quizzed” him. He did well.

Tonight, I went for something a little more lighthearted - “I’m a Little Teapot.” He thought it was pretty funny.

After we sang it a few times, he asked, “Why does it say ‘tip me over and pour me out’?”

“Because when the water is hot you pour it out,” I replied, somewhat confused, since he is very familiar with tea drinking. (Bob and I are big tea drinkers.)

“You pour the water out. You don’t pour the teapot out!!!”

I love this age!

Cute Things

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

I have to share a couple of the cute things that Little E has done lately before I forget them.

Yesterday, it was freezing in here and he was walking around in his boxer shorts (his new thing). I said, “[E], why don’t you put some clothes on? It’s making me cold just looking at you.”

To which he replied, “Then stop looking at me.”

Yeah. He’s just barely four.

In addition to being a smarty-pants, he is also very sweet. The other day, I was having a bad morning. I just woke up grumpy, so I stayed in bed for a little bit. E came in and said, “You seemed more happy when I was in here before.” (He had come in to say good morning when we first woke up.)

A minute later, he came back with a glass of water and said, “I thought this would make you feel better.”

It sure did make me feel better, but it was not the water that did it.
